In his early childhood, Bimal Singha was a lonely boy with a dream-struck, possessed look. He neither frolicked with friends nor studied hard to do well in examinations. But he read all sorts of books. It was the world of books that gave him company throughout his life. As he grew up, the unbending rebel in him gradually came to the fore. He found an outlet in SFI activism that formed a part of the burgeoning communist movement in the state. After completing school at Kamalpur he went to study at the Ramakrishna Mahavidyalaya of Kailashahar, the neighboring sub-divisional town. Bimal Singha simply went, saw and won the heart of the place and it was at Kailashahar that he electrified the world again and again with his awe-inspiring heroic deeds. The student community of the town was under the spell of his blazing personality. Besides being an SFI activist and the council secretary of RK Mahavidyalaya, he became a regular party member and plunged into action whenever reports of exploitation and suffering came his way.
The then principal of RKM, though a dedicated soul in the initial stages, had become the embodiment of controversy. Whimsical termination of teachers and other employees, threatening students with dire consequences if and when the college administration was called into question had become the terrifying reality about the college. Bimal Singha organized a students’ movement against the principal. For two days the Principal had to remain gheraoed by a group of students until he tendered his resignation.
