THOSE SWEET MEMORIES - Hira Kumari (Mini)

DATE : 18 MAY, 09

Dear readers, this is the first article in my life! I am definitely not a good writer but just could not stop myself from writing something after I have seen this website. I think, for me it is the best place to share my opinion regarding our culture, identity and memories etc. because, I find it my very own. So, please forgive and correct me if any mistake is found in my writing.

Hira Kumari (Mini)

Like each and every person, me too have lots of memories that can not be forgotten. Today I would like to share an incident which made me proud to be a Bishnupriya Manipuri.

I love our traditional dress [tolofuti and inafi] and do not miss to wear it whenever an opportunity comes. It may be in a multi-social gathering. I think it is a strong symbolic identity of the community.

It was Durga Puja, in Pittsburgh, US, on 12th Oct 2008. Many people from different communities were present there. I was with our traditional dress, so most of the people approached me to know what I wore was called and I explained them about the dress proudly. After Pushpanjali, I was standing in front of the deities in the hall, then a Bengali lady approached me and said, "tomar inafi ta khub sundar" means your inafi  is very nice. I was quite surprise to hear the word inafi because, no one present there was familiar with the dress. Then I came to know that she is an Indian classical dancer and knows Manipuri dance as well and has a workshop in Pittsburgh.

That day I realized that we may be anywhere in the world there are the ways to show our identity.

According to me, I think Japanese women the way they drap thier Kimono with other accessories and hair is outstanding. I find their fabric and color combination truly amazing. And for me when Tolofuti and and the inafi (ranifi) is drapped in proper way with a namsha I beleive god will not shy away from appreciating.
