Bishnupriya Manipuris: In my eyes; by Ranjan Saikia 8th Jan, 09

Strange it may seem to be, but my first real encounter with Bishnupiya Manipuri was not in Assam, but in fact here in Delhi. This unknown person took me as a friend and provided me the roof, so that I can initiate my struggle in Delhi. I am obliged to two guys who turned out be my friends first and then my brothers. They are more than that to me.

It is from them that I came to know about the two most notable dishes among the Manipuri community.

I first came to know about this community, when I used to be in Dibrugarh. I used to spend my summer and winter vacations there. Here was a boy whose parents used to speak different language and he used to talk with us in Assamese. Naturally, my little mind then used to wonder, what type of words they are using. Once I asked my granny and she told me that the family was Bishnupriya Manipuri. Just only last year, I met this boy. I asked something in Bishnupriya Manipuri and he could not understand a thing! As a matter of fact, my vocabulary is also not that great, but I can very well understand it.

Over the years in Delhi, I have met some of the most wonderful guys of this community and they have certainly created a good impression. In fact, you can find them all over in each and every field, be it advertising, IT, telecommunications, defense and many others. Further, among my Manipuri friend circle, I have been accepted as one of them. It is indeed a great privilege for me. I have smiled with them, I have cried with them and I have spent some amazing moments of my life.

When the editor of this site asked me to put together some thoughts, I did not know what to write and where to start with. One thing is for sure, I have gained an insight in to their lifestyle. They are no doubt modern, but deep down they are deeply religious. I think it is the spiritual side of this community that keeps them going forward.

The future is good as the youths now are more interested to know about their history and their community. Considering the present circumstances, it is indeed advantageous to have a platform from where the youth can propagate their views in the right direction.

One thing I would like to clarify here that Assam is not meant for Assamese.  The concept of Assamese society is how the Bodos, the Bishnupriya Manipuris, the Bengalis, the Ahoms, the Chutias and the Morans living together as a whole entity. Unfortunately, there are some elements who want to break it. So, it is the responsibility of us that we should try to live and co exist together, just like our forefathers did.

This is all what I have to say….Nothing less nothing more…
